Segregated funds vs. mutual funds

Segregated funds are similar to mutual funds in that money is pooled to buy stocks, bonds, and other securities to maximize investment gains. Segregated funds are insurance contracts that offer special benefits such as a principal investment guarantee against loss, guaranteed income, and creditor protection.

Unlike mutual funds, segregated funds guarantee most of your initial investment at the time of maturity or in the event of death. Depending on the insurance provider, the guarantee can vary from 75% to 100% of the net principal investment amount. Think of segregated funds as mutual fund investments with a safety net.
