Managed investing FAQ

Managed investing is when a professional investment manager or financial advisor manages your business’s investments for you. These advisors handle the day-to-day work of managing the business's investment portfolio, making investment decisions that align with the business’s financial goals. Those goals often involve maximizing profits, managing risk and minimizing taxes.

With a managed account, your business owns and controls an account and the assets in the account, while an investment professional manages those assets for you. As the account owner, you can see everything in the account and make changes easily.

A managed fund is sometimes called a pooled fund because a professional advisor pools money from multiple investors and invests the money together. As an investor in a managed fund, you don’t own the assets directly. Instead, you have indirect ownership of the assets—through shares or units in the fund. Managed funds often provide great diversification but offer less transparency than a managed account. A mutual fund is one example of a managed fund.

The choice between managed funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) depends on your business’s goals and preferences.

ETFs are pooled investments similar to mutual funds, where multiple individual securities tracking a specific index live under one umbrella. They typically have lower fees and are traded daily, which makes them a great option if you’re a cost-conscious business that needs more access to your funds.

If you want your business’s investments professionally managed so you can be less hands-on, then managed funds could be a good choice. They could also be a good fit if you’re looking for lower-risk options, since managed funds offer more diversification than ETFs.

Investment management fees for businesses depend on factors like how much your business is investing, how complex your investment strategy is and the specific services you use. Connect with one of our advisors to learn more about how we handle your assets under management (AUM) and associated investment management fees.
