Scholarships & bursaries FAQ

You can think of bursaries as a financial helping hand. They’re designed to help students in financial need cover school costs. These can include tuition, living expenses, textbooks, and other course materials.

While bursaries help those in financial need, scholarships often consider students’ accomplishments as well. This can include:

  • Academic excellence – getting high grades in your studies.

  • Merit-based – achieving great things in sports, art, music, or other extra-curricular activities.

  • Community involvement – making a positive impact in your community.

It all depends on the scholarship you’re applying for.

High school bursaries and scholarships are not taxable in Canada.

Post-secondary scholarships and bursaries are also not typically taxable, as long as you meet certain criteria:

  • You must be studying at a recognized post-secondary school approved by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

  • You must be working towards a degree, diploma, or certificate.

  • The money you get must be meant for educational expenses, such as tuition, mandatory fees and required course materials.

Note: if your bursary or scholarship includes money for costs like living expenses, these amounts may be taxable.
